Private Exploitation of the North-Western Sahara Aquifer System

چکیده

We formulate a hydro-economic model of the North-Western Sahara Aquifer System (NWSAS) to assess effects intensive pumping on groundwater stock and examine subsequent consequences aquifer depletion. This large system comprises multi-layer reservoirs with vertical exchanges, all exploited under open access properties. first develop theoretical account for relevant features NWSAS by introducing, in standard Gisser-Sanchez model, non-stationary demand quadratic stock-dependent cost functions. In second step, we calibrate parameters values using data from over 1955–2000. finally simulate time evolution exploitation an open-access regime. specifically trajectories piezometric levels two reservoirs, natural outlets, modification water balances. find that outlets might be totally dried before 2050.

Evidence of rift valley fever seroprevalence in the Sahrawi semi-nomadic pastoralist system, Western Sahara

BACKGROUND The increasing global importance of Rift Valley fever (RVF) is clearly demonstrated by its geographical expansion. The presence of a wide range of host and vector species, and the epidemiological characteristics of RVF, have led to concerns that epidemics will continue to occur in previously unaffected regions of Africa. The proximity of the Sahrawi territories of Western Sahara to e...

African humid periods triggered the reactivation of a large river system in Western Sahara

The Sahara experienced several humid episodes during the late Quaternary, associated with the development of vast fluvial networks and enhanced freshwater delivery to the surrounding ocean margins. In particular, marine sediment records off Western Sahara indicate deposition of river-borne material at those times, implying sustained fluvial discharges along the West African margin. Today, howev...

Cryptococcus gattii: Emergence in Western North America: Exploitation of a Novel Ecological Niche

The relatively uncommon fungal pathogen Cryptococcus gattii recently emerged as a significant cause of cryptococcal disease in human and animals in the Pacific Northwest of North America. Although genetic studies indicated its possible presence in the Pacific Northwest for more than 30 years, C. gattii as an etiological agent was largely unknown in this region prior to 1999. The recent emergenc...
